Updated!! Help Pass the Ohio Dyslexia Bill!

Posted on: March 31, 2010

A word from Martha Chiodi, a Member of the Executive Committee for the Ohio Dyslexia Law:

Presently a group of people interested in helping students who are struggling in reading are working on getting an Ohio Dyslexia Law passed. The bill will help to identify students and see that they get proper reading instruction in school. It will help to get teachers in colleges and universities trained in the multisensory approach in teaching reading.

We know that some families with dyslexic children have received no help from their schools. Many have had to have their children privately tested and tutored, yet they are paying for a free public education! Where is this free education for them? We know this….but do our legislators know this? Not many! This is where we need your help! We need you to contact your state representative and senator and explain this problem to them. Most legislators who have been contacted were not aware that this problem existed. As of now….only a small number have been contacted. When the Bill is introduced we want every legislator to know something about it.

This is where we need your help. We need you to contact your representative and senator and tell them of the existing problem. For further information go to:
http://www.cincinnatidyslexia.org

We now have a timeline for the Bill. The Bill will be written in April – early May. It will be assigned a number to be introduced. Representative Ted Celeste, the sponsor, will introduce the bill. At the second hearing, supporters, with testimonials, will be included. Rep. Celeste will then ask for co-sponsors, reps who will sign on to the bill.

The bill could pass quickly depending on the knowledge and excitement of the reps for the bill……or linger….or die. Two bills have already died in the Ohio Legislature. We don’t want this to happen again.
**By this time table, we have a little more than a month to get parents, tutors, teachers and dyslexics to contact their representatives!!!!

We need your help! Our kids need your help! Contact your state congressmen.
To contact you Senator go to: http://www.ohiosenate.gov/
To contact your Representative go to: http://www.house.state.oh.us/

Or….the simplest way is to call the Board of Elections: 513.632.7000. They are SO helpful!!! For Montgomery County call: 937.225.5656.

When you do contact your legislators send us the names of the representative and senator and the number of their districts so we know who still has to be contacted.
Send this information to: info@cincinnatidyslexia.org

Thank you,
Martha Chiodi

Important Update: View an updated chart of which legislators have and have not been contacted. Most legislators have said they did not realize that a problem existed in schools for dyslexics and their families.
