Join Facebook and the Ohio Dyslexia Group.
Go to www:Facebook.com and press the green button after you sign up (write down your password). After you log in and come to your site, look to the right for Applications in a box with Invite friends highlighted in green. Once you click on and enter the Groups page, type in Dyslexia Group at the top space (left of +Create a New Group). The next screen will show boxes relating to dyslexia. Place your cursor in the Ohio Dyslexia Group box and click on “join”. That is it.

What: We’ll make signs for the rally in Columbus (Oct. 1st) and plan carpools. We’ll also share stories that may be written and sent to legislators.
Our goal: Promote Dyslexia Awareness Day

Louisa Cook Moats has been a teacher, psychologist, researcher, graduate school faculty member, and author of many influential scientific journal articles, books, and policy papers on the topics of reading, spelling, language, and teacher preparation. She began her professional career as a neuropsychology technician and teacher of students with learning disabilities.

Ohio Dyslexia Law

A state wide effort is being formed to get a Dyslexia Law passed in Ohio. This is necessary so students are screened and taught properly if they are dyslexic or struggling in reading. Many people, including legislators, know NOTHING about dyslexia. How are they going to be educated about it? This is our biggest problem right now. This is where each of you can help.

Members from the three IDA branches met with Representative Ted Celeste who will be introducing the bill in the House. The bill has not been written as yet. Be prepared for when it is written. We will let you know when it will be introduced. Then you will be asked to contact your legislators asking them to vote for the Ohio Dyslexia Law.

Know who your state representatives and senators are.

Contact your legislators now to inform them of the need for such a bill. It would be great to arrange for a personal visit with your legislators. Inform them of your experience with dyslexia.

When the bill is introduced, the legislators will have persons in mind as well as emails and letters. A meeting with your legislators on the day of the rally would be an effective reinforcement!

If you are a parent of a dyslexic child or a child struggling in reading and are having difficulty getting appropriate instruction due to misunderstanding in schools and lack of adequate teacher training be prepared to tell your story. Tell your story to your legislators: in person and in writing. If you go in person…leave a written copy with her/him. Send us a copy of your story or bring it with you at the October Rally. Fall Update!
As the new school year approaches, DaytonREAD is in the process of planning and we want YOU to be a part of this important step! We are regularly receiving news of upcoming events and inquiries from parents looking for support. We want to continue providing support to those in need, but we can only do this with your help. Please mark your calendars for our planning meeting on Tuesday, August 18th at the Kettering-Moraine Library from 6:45-8:15pm. If you have someone affected by dyslexia in your life, you are encouraged to attend. We want to hear from you!

Dayton READ will be meeting this Thursday, April 16 from 6:45-8:15 at the Kettering-Moraine Library.

This month we’ll view and discuss portions of the national documentary: Demystifying Dyslexia.
An estimated 10 to 15 percent — one in every 10 Americans — suffers to some degree from dyslexia, an often misunderstood learning difficulty characterized by problems with word recognition and poor spelling. Hosted by Olympic champion Bruce Jenner, DEMYSTIFYING DYSLEXIA profiles inspiring individuals confronting the challenges of living with dyslexia. Compelling personal stories, innovative educational methods and cutting-edge scientific research highlight the important contemporary issues surrounding dyslexia. The program also offers valuable insight into the inner-workings of the dyslexic mind and provides parents and teachers guidance for reaching a dyslexic child.

Ohio Valley Branch/IDA Spring Conference

Linda Farrell will be speaking on March 28, 2009 at the Anderson Township Community Center.

Linda Farrell is co-founder of Really Great Reading . She is a reading specialist who worked independently as a reading consultant prior to founding Really Great Reading. Linda developed many of the workshops and products that Really Great Reading offers. She gives workshops to schools, districts, and states nationally. She also continues to develop multi-sensory materials to help beginning and struggling readers. In her workshops and conferences she offers attendees some real hands-on tools they are able to take back and use in the classroom the next day. Among other things , she presents a matrix for teachers to help them pinpoint the exact weaknesses of the reader. Linda is a national LETRS trainer and also a national DIBELS trainer for Sopris West.

When registration information becomes available we’ll be sure to pass it on.
