Ohio Dyslexia Law

Posted in Ohio Events at 12:09 am by daytonread

Ohio Dyslexia Law

A state wide effort is being formed to get a Dyslexia Law passed in Ohio. This is necessary so students are screened and taught properly if they are dyslexic or struggling in reading.  Many people, including legislators,  know NOTHING about dyslexia. How are they going to be educated about it?  This is our biggest problem right now.  This is where each of you can help.

Members from the three IDA branches met with Representative Ted Celeste who will be introducing the bill in the House. The bill has not been written as yet.  Be prepared for when it is written.  We will let you know when it will be introduced.  Then you will be asked to contact your legislators asking them to vote for the Ohio Dyslexia Law.

Know who your state representatives and senators are.

Contact your legislators now to inform them of the need for such a bill. It would be great to arrange for a personal visit with your legislators. Inform them of your experience with dyslexia.

When the bill is introduced, the legislators will have persons in mind as well as emails and letters.  A meeting with your legislators on the day of the rally would be an effective reinforcement!

For more information about dyslexia and multisensory teaching go to these sources.

•  Go to:  Dyslexia Basics-for the Fact Sheet about Dyslexia.

•  Go to: Multisensory Teaching - for the Fact Sheet about Multisensory Teaching.

If you are a parent of a dyslexic child or a child struggling in reading and are having difficulty getting appropriate instruction due to misunderstanding in schools and lack of adequate teacher training be prepared to tell your story.  Tell your story to your legislators: in person and in writing. If you go in person…leave a written copy with her/him.  Send us a copy of your story or bring it with you at the October Rally.  We want to show a united effort in our goal to help our struggling students.  To view ideas for your STORY click here..

•  Go to: www.interdys.org (the national website) for further information about dyslexia.

Contact Your Representative and Senator

•  Go to www.house.state.oh.us to search for your Representative to the Ohio House. Fill in your name and zip code +4 in the Member Quick Search box.

•  Go to www.senate.state.oh.us/ to search for your Senator to the Ohio Senate. Click on Your Senators then click on View a List of Ohio Senators by Zip Code and enter your zip code + 4.   If you have difficulty finding your legislators, contact the Board of Elections.
