Fall Update!
As the new school year approaches, DaytonREAD is in the process of planning and we want YOU to be a part of this important step! We are regularly receiving news of upcoming events and inquiries from parents looking for support. We want to continue providing support to those in need, but we can only do this with your help. Please mark your calendars for our planning meeting on Tuesday, August 18th at the Kettering-Moraine Library from 6:45-8:15pm. If you have someone affected by dyslexia in your life, you are encouraged to attend. We want to hear from you!

Welcome 2009!

If you have been thinking about checking out DaytonREAD, now is the time!  We have meetings scheduled for the third Thursdays in February, March, and April.  Same time, same place – hope you can make it!

Please join us on Thursday, February 19th from 6:45 pm until 8:15 pm at the Kettering-Moraine Library for our regular monthly meeting.  We plan to take time for discussion in a round-table format.  Teachers and tutors, please come with your best hints and tips for lesson planning.  Parents, this will give you a time to share your thoughts and gain insights from others who have traveled a similar path.  Everyone is welcome!

DaytonREAD ~ September Meeting

Dayton READ has arranged to have State Representative Arlene Setzer
come speak to the group. Arlene currently serves as Chair of the
Education Committee. At the meeting she will highlight what’s going
on in education. She looks forward to answering questions, as well
as explaining the process and procedure for working on legislation
that deals with dyslexia.

We’ll meet at the Kettering-Moraine Library, 6:45-8:15 pm on
Thursday, Sept. 18th.

Please bring a friend or three! We’d love to have a great turn out
for Representative Setzer.

If you’d like to know more about Arlene Setzer, read on…
Prior to joining the House, Representative Setzer worked as a teacher
at Vandalia-Butler High School for more than 30 years, teaching
business and computer classes and serving as an advisor for numerous
student organizations and events. She also served on Vandalia City
Council from 1982 until 2000. During her tenure on city council,
Representative Setzer was vice-mayor from 1986 to 1988 and again from
1995 to 2000.

Representative Setzer graduated from Fairview High School in Dayton.
She earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration from the
University of Dayton and her master’s degree in education with
additional post-graduate work from Wright State University.

DaytonREAD ~ August Meeting

It’s that time of year when everyone is heading back to school and to kick off the new school year we have a special meeting planned for this month.  On August 21st we will be meeting at the Miami Valley Regional Center on Springfield Street.  Pat Gay, Family Consultant, will be giving us a tour of the facility, including lending library, and tell us about their available services.  She is also going to share information on parental rights with our group.  This a meeting for educators and families alike! 

When: Thursday, August 21st from 6:45 pm until 8:15 pm.                           

Where: Miami Valley Regional Center located at 4801 Springfield St, Dayton, OH  45431 (less than a mile from the Air Force Museum!)  Plan to meet in the main lobby.

DaytonREAD ~ June Meeting

Educational Diagnosticitan and Consultant Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and in private practice.

Instructor, Miami University – Orton-Gillingham Practicum in Multi-Sensory Phonics Instruction, Basic and Advanced Levels

Subject:  Patricia Yates will explain the implications of a student’s results the Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing (CTOPP).

DaytonREAD ~ April Meeting

Please join us on Thursday, April 17 from 6:45 pm until 8:15 pm at the Kettering-Moraine Library for our regular monthly meeting.  We will be in the meeting room, which is located just inside the back entrance across from the service desk. 

Our speaker will be Nancy Lewkowicz, Ph.D and she is the author of The Word Workout Program.  Highlights of the program include:

-          An intensive, highly structured, multisensory approach to teaching decoding of longer words.

-          Designed for students aged 12 and up – clearly “not for little kids.”

-          Lessons focus on words of three or more syllables.

-          Available for two levels: middle school, or high school to adult. 

-          Helps fill the gap in materials suitable for older students.

DaytonREAD ~ March Meeting

Please join us on Thursday, March 20th from 6:45 pm until 8:15 pm at the Kettering-Moraine Library for our regular monthly meeting.  This month’s speaker is Randy Shipley.  Everyone is welcome!

Randy Shipley has been a school psychologist for Miamisburg Schools, retiring last spring…But not really retiring, he can tell us some of the things he’s doing now.  Randy will discuss several types of tests commonly administered to children and how to understand what scores from these tests might reflect in a given child.  Afterward there will be a question and answer time.

This month we want to take some time to discuss future planning for DaytonREAD. Beth Porter has ideas to share from a workshop she attended during the IDA Conference in Dallas last November to get the ball rolling. So please come with your ideas and suggestions!

Then we also want to take some time and offer discussion groups for parents and tutors. Tutors, please come with your best hints and tips for lesson planning. Parents, this will give you a time to share your thoughts and gain insights from others who have traveled a similar path.
